Rationale:
Latin America and Canada, Europe, Australia, and Oceania
In sixth grade, students begin the study of major world regions. The four strands are integrated, with history as the central strand. The history strand focuses on historical developments essential to understanding a specific region in the modern world. The geography strand relates the importance of geography to each region’s development. The civics strand examines political structure in each region. The economics strand continues to build basic economic concepts and introduces students to the economic development of each region. You will be held responsible for your work and your behavior.
Textbook:
Students will be issued a textbook during the first weeks of school. Students are expected to cover their textbooks in order to prevent excessive wear and tear that accumulates during the year.
Assessments:
Throughout the year, a variety of assessment measures will be utilized to measure student progress, document student success, and serve as a tool for refining curriculum. A variety of assessment measures allows for multiple student modalities to be assessed. The following types of assessments are planned for the upcoming year (assessments may be added or excluded based upon learning situations): pen and paper tests, quizzes, research reports, performances, notebooks, and projects. Rubrics will be utilized to grade performance-based assessment measures.
Composition Notebook:
The purpose of keeping a notebook is to learn organization and to help you study for test. Students are required to keep all of their assignments in Social Studies. Students will be required to keep all of their assignments in a Composition Notebook.
Daily Classwork Assignment:
The Greatest portion of each student’s grade will be based on classroom assignments. We have many hands-on activities in Social Studies, and the student will be responsible for each one.
Tests and Quizzes:
Students will have weekly quizzes based on content and end-of-unit tests every 3-4 weeks.
Late Assignments:
LATE WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED for classwork or homework. Projects can be submitted late up to three days with a 10% penalty for each day.
Plagiarism:
To plagiarize is to take the ideas, phrasing, work of another person and represent it as your one.
Any plagiarized assignments will be assigned a zero and will not be allowed to make-up.
The teacher reserves the right to adjust any section of this syllabus during the semester by modifying the workload and/or grading procedures to meet the academic needs and abilities of the individual student.
